It has probably never been easier to find books of all types, including the classic literature that makes up the bulk of this blog. The growth in electronic media has also made accessing these works much easier too. Here are some of the resources I have found to be most useful for the reader over the years.
General reading websites
Goodreads – one of the most useful sites for finding books, friending like minded readers and tracking your reading as well as reviewing books. There are many features such as lists, blog posts, groups etc. that make this a social site should you so wish. People can see and comment on your reviews (although you can turn off that feature) and reading through reviews is very interesting. I am not a particular fan of their rating system since the labels for each star rating don’t give enough breadth in my opinion but this is a minor quibble. Overall I use this very frequently.
Libraries
They have had a hard time recently, but so has the pastime of reading generally. They are still great resources and we are lucky to have them. These days they can provide audio and digital books as well as the traditional articles so one doesn’t even need to enter the buildings where books are housed.
Axis360 – this is the app that I use to access my library account for audio and ebooks where one can download items to consume on laptop, tablet or smartphone. I love it. Some of the audio books have been a little buggy in my experience and can shut down without warning but this is minor. Well worth using
Johnson County Library – my local library. Probably of no interest to anyone else but hey, I like it!
Booksellers
Amazon – obviously needs no introduction as the go to place for pretty much anything you could want or need. Books being where they started there is a tremendous selection across all platforms. Libraries don’t always have older books, Amazon usually does!
Barnes and Noble – if you are US based and a book lover, there are few better places to hang out and peruse the titles on offer. I am a particular fan of their “classics” where you can purchase two classic literary works for $10. Their online presence is great too. They seem to buck the trend of vanishing retailers and outlasted others such as Borders over the years.
